The shortest walk across Ampang.
Jalan Ampang carries eight lanes between the diplomatic district and the city centre. For thirty years it cut office workers, hawker-stall regulars, and schoolchildren on the eastern side from the places they worked, ate, and studied on the west. Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) asked for a continuous covered walkway and cycle path, built as a single span and completed within fourteen months.
The structure is a twin arch: two 240-metre Vierendeel arches in steel, painted warm matt white, carrying a chengal hardwood deck. The glass canopy runs full length and uses a 2 mm laminated specification rated for the south-west monsoon. The planting is ferns, ginger, and bougainvillea at twelve-metre intervals, set in a continuous deck trough irrigated by rainwater captured from the canopy.
The bridge opened in November 2022 and has averaged 32,000 people per day since. It cost £14.2 million sterling, finished three weeks under schedule, and won the ARCASIA Gold Award for Public Infrastructure in 2023. It was the studio's first commission in Malaysia and led to the Kuala Lumpur office in early 2023.
